Floating Drug Delivery Systems: A Promising Approach for Prolonged Gastric Retention

Abstract
Floating drug delivery systems have garnered significant attention in recent decades as they address limitations of conventional drug delivery systems such as frequent dosing and restricted bioavailability due to short gastric emptying time. An optimal floating drug delivery system remains in the stomach for an extended duration and continuously releases the active pharmaceutical ingredient. These systems remain suspended in gastric fluid, thereby enhancing drug bioavailability and prolonging pharmacological action. This review compiles recent research on gastroretentive floating tablets, including their principles, advantages, classification, preparation methods, evaluation techniques, and potential applications. Special emphasis is given to effervescent floating drug delivery systems and formulation factors influencing gastric retention.
